The university also pays much attention to discipline development, considering it a key to build the university's core competitiveness. By highlighting the advantage and feature of civil engineering and boosting the cross-development of conventional and emerging disciplines, the university continuously improves the mix of disciplines and the level of research and development and has developed a number of advantageous fields, such as civil engineering, urban planning and building design, intelligent buildings and building energy conservation. It has one key laboratory jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Shandong Province, three disciplines with professorship of Taishan Scholar, three provincial key laboratories, eight provincial engineering and technological research centers, one provincial intangible cultural heritage research base. In the review of key programs of Shandong province for the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university was recognized to have ten provincial key disciplines, six key laboratories in universities of Shandong and two provincial university humanity and social science research base, among which two were rated specialty disciplines and one laboratory recognized as a provincial key laboratory to receive stronger support. These signify breakthroughs in the development of disciplinary platform.
