Beijing Normal University

Beijing Normal University (BNU) has a history of more than 100 years, which is almost as long as the history of Chinese modern education. The University has developed from the Faculty of Education, Capital Metropolitan University established in 1902 under the concept of Establish school, prioritize teacher education, which initiated teacher training in Chinese higher education. After several times of merging and reforming since 1949, especially in the 1980s, Beijing Normal University has moved into the new age of rapid development. The University’s history is an epitome of the development of modern teacher training and Chinese higher education. Beijing Normal University has always been committed to international exchange and cooperation. At present, the university has established cooperative ties with over 200 universities, international organizations and enterprises from more than 30 countries and regions. In the field of cooperative education, Beijing Normal University has jointly held a number of degree and non-degree programs with educational institutions in Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Canada, Australia, UK and the United States. We aim that each year 10% of the students are expected to have overseas experience. Established in 2004, the Beijing Normal University- Hong Kong Baptist University United International College is the first united college jointly established by a Chinese mainland university and a Hong Kong SAR university. The University is a national base for Teaching Chinese as Second Language; it makes great efforts to expand programs for international students. So far there are 2,015 long-term international students from 58 countries and regions studying in Beijing Normal University, which makes Beijing Normal University top No. 4 among all Chinese universities in the ranking table of international student body. Beijing Normal University-University of California Summer Program, Princeton in Beijing, and Beijing Normal University-Dartmouth College Short-Term Chinese Language Program have a widely reputation in the USA. Moreover, BNU established 4 Confucius Institutes overseas, two in the USA, one in Canada and one in UK, aiming to promote Chinese language and culture in a global base. Beijing Normal University encourages faculties and students to establish academic exchange and cooperation with their counterparts overseas, and has carried out collaborative research programs with international educational and research institutions in many fields. Over 1,000 teachers and students are sent abroad each year to participate in exchange programs.
