Jiangsu Shipping Vocational and Technical College is a full-time, publicly accredited institution of higher education established with the approval of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. It is co-built by the Provincial Department of Transportation and Nantong Municipal People's Government. Situated in Nantong, a city renowned for its scenic beauty, sports culture, educational excellence, architectural heritage, and longevity, the college falls under the jurisdiction of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transportation. Its predecessor, the Jiangsu Nantong River Transport School, was founded in 1960. In 1979, it began transitioning to marine transport education, and in 1989, it was renamed Jiangsu Nantong Shipping School. The spirit of maritime craftsmanship has been passed down through generations, and the college continues to uphold the educational philosophy of Mr. Zhang Jian, a renowned educator.
The college enjoys a prestigious reputation among China’s higher vocational institutions. It is recognized as a national-level quality higher vocational college, a demonstration (backbone) higher vocational college, and a transportation vocational education demonstration college. It has also received accolades from the Ministry of Education for outstanding talent cultivation and is one of the first batch of provincial-level demonstration higher vocational colleges and high-level higher vocational college construction units in Jiangsu Province. As the chairman unit of the National Marine Vocational Education Group and the Vocational Education Branch of the China Transportation Education Research Association, the college has been awarded the "National Top 50" distinction multiple times in various categories, including comprehensive strength, employment quality, international influence, service contribution, teaching resources, and student satisfaction. In the "China Vocational Education Quality Annual Report 2022," the college ranked among the top 100 in teacher development, student development, resource construction, and service contribution indices, making it one of only 20 vocational colleges nationwide to achieve this distinction across all four categories.
The campus spans nearly 1,000 mu (approximately 667 acres), with a total building area exceeding 370,000 square meters. It boasts nine national-level vocational education training bases, 13 provincial-level vocational education training bases, and six Nantong key laboratories. The college also houses over ten provincial and municipal science and technology service institutions, such as the Jiangsu Marine Engineering Technology Research and Development Center. Additionally, it has established 37 on-campus training bases and nearly 300 off-campus internship and employment bases. Collaborating with enterprises, the college has built three productive teaching practice ships: "Heilan Boat," "Changyang Gate," and "Changchun Gate." Led by Jiangsu Port Group and Jiangsu Ocean University, the college has established an integrated community of industry and education in the port industry, comprising nearly 40 units. Furthermore, in partnership with Haimen Economic and Technological Development Zone and China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., the Nantong Shipbuilding and Offshore Equipment Industry and Education Joint was established, earning recognition as a provincial-level industry and education joint.
Currently, the college enrolls over 13,000 students and offers 42 majors across seven secondary schools: Marine Technology, Marine Engineering, Shipping and Ocean Engineering, Transportation Management and Economics, Traffic Engineering, Intelligent Manufacturing and Information, and Humanities and Arts. It also includes two public course teaching units: the Marxism School and the Basic Teaching Department. The college has established nine industrial colleges in collaboration with leading enterprises, including Rail Transit, Yihang Aviation, Smart Port, Haishun, Jingdong Smart Logistics, Zhaoshang Heavy Industry, Sanji Intelligent Manufacturing, Zhongtian, and New Yangzi Field Engineers, fostering a community of professional co-construction, teacher exchange, resource sharing, and talent education integration.
The college operates four quality management systems—education quality, training quality, integrity risk prevention and control, and internal control—and has obtained six quality system certifications in accordance with ISO9001, the National Maritime Safety Administration’s quality management rules, and the Norwegian Classification Society. The college has fully implemented the national education administrative department’s requirements for teaching consultation reform, establishing a distinctive internal quality assurance system that has passed provincial site reviews. Its consultation reform cases have been rated as "Excellent Typical Cases of Teaching Consultation Reform in National Higher Vocational Colleges" and included in both national and provincial case compilations.
The college employs 655 full-time teachers, of whom 66 hold senior professional titles (46.4%), 74.8% possess master’s degrees or higher, and 71% are dual-qualified teachers. Among the faculty are recipients of the State Council’s special allowance, a national "10,000 Plan" teaching master, a National*** famous teaching teachers in transportation vocational education, five famous teaching teachers in Jiangsu Province universities, and four Jiangsu Craftsmen.
