Xi 'an Shiyou University (Xi 'an Shiyou University) is the only general university in Northwest China with petroleum and petrochemical characteristics. It is a university jointly built by Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the three major national petroleum companies, a high-level university in Shaanxi Province, and an independent enrollment institution for international students with Chinese government scholarships. The school was founded in 1951 as the Northwest Petroleum Industry College under the Central Ministry of Fuel Industry. In 1958, it was upgraded and renamed Xi 'an Petroleum Institute. In 1969, the college ceased to operate. In 1980, Xi 'an Petroleum Institute resumed operation under the Ministry of Petroleum Industry. In 2000, it was transferred from the China National Petroleum Corporation to the central and local co-construction, and mainly managed by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. In 2003, it was renamed Xi 'an Shiyou University. In 2011, it was selected as a high-level university in Shaanxi Province.
