Guangzhou University

Guangzhou University (GU) is a full-time institution of higher learning organized by the People's Government of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. It implements the school-running system jointly built by provinces and cities and focuses on the city. It is a university under the national "111 Plan" and a key university in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou. The history of Guangzhou University can be traced back to the private Guangzhou University founded in 1927. In 1951, it was merged into South China Union University. In 1983, it was reorganized and renamed Guangzhou University in 1984. In July 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it merged with Guangzhou Institute of Education (founded in 1953), Guangzhou Teachers College (founded in 1958), West College of South China Institute of Construction (founded in 1984) and Guangzhou Higher Teachers College (founded in 1985) to form the new Guangzhou University. As of October 2023, the university has University Town, Guihuagang, and Huangpu Research Institute/Graduate School "One campus and three gardens", with a total campus area of 1,880 mu and a total construction area of 885,000 square meters. It has 25 professional colleges and 74 undergraduate majors. It has 8 post-doctoral research mobile stations, 10 first-level doctoral programs, 34 academic master's degree programs, and 30 professional master's degree programs. There are 3,329 staff members, 30,160 full-time undergraduates, 8,593 master's and doctoral students. On the evening of October 24, 2023, Guangzhou University announced that it signed a contract with Guangdong Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering (Guangzhou) to start the construction of the "College of Marine Science of Guangzhou University". In terms of personnel training, starting with the training of master's and doctoral students, we will accelerate the training of a number of high-quality composite innovative talents in the field of Marine science and engineering.
