The school was founded in 1954. In 2000, Shanghai Institute of Technology was formed by the merger of Shanghai Light Industry College, Shanghai Metallurgy College, and Shanghai Chemical Engineering College. In 2006, the Shanghai Fragrance Research Institute affiliated to the former Ministry of Light Industry was merged into the school. In 2008, it officially became a master's degree authorizing unit. In 2016, it was renamed Shanghai University of Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It will be approved as a doctorate-granting unit in 2021.
According to information on the school's official website in May 2023, the school has two campuses, Fengxian Campus and Xuhui Campus, covering an area of 1,428 acres and a construction area of approximately 582,700 square meters; it has 19 secondary colleges (departments) and 56 undergraduate majors. There are 6 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 1 first-level discipline for doctoral degree authorization, 8 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, and 11 professional master's degree authorization categories; there are more than 3,200 full-time graduate students and more than 16,000 undergraduate and junior college students. There are more than 1,700 faculty members, including 1,261 full-time teachers.
