The school history of Shanghai Maritime University can be traced back to 1909, the Shipping Department of Shanghai Higher Industrial School of the Ministry of Posts and Communications in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1911, the Higher Merchant Shipping School of the Ministry of Posts and Communications was formally established. Schools, Ministry of Communications Wusong Merchant Shipping Academy, National Chongqing Merchant Shipping Academy, National Wusong Merchant Shipping Academy, National Shanghai Navigation Academy. In 1958, the Ministry of Communications reorganized the Shanghai Maritime Academy. In 2000, Shanghai Maritime University was placed under the management of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government by the Ministry of Communications. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement to jointly build Shanghai Maritime University.
As of November 2022, the school has three campuses including Lingang (main campus), Gangwan, and Gaoheng Building on Minsheng Road, with a total construction area of 600,000 square meters; there are 16 secondary school-running departments and 52 undergraduate majors; There are 3 post-doctoral research stations, 4 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 17 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 17 first-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, 64 second-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, and 13 professional master’s degree authorization points category; there are nearly 1,300 full-time teachers, and among more than 27,000 students, there are nearly 16,000 full-time undergraduates and nearly 8,000 postgraduates
