Ningbo University was founded in 1986, donated by Bao Yugang, and Deng Xiaoping inscribed the school name. At the beginning of the school's establishment, it was built with the assistance of Zhejiang University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, and the former Hangzhou University. In 1996, the former Ningbo University, Ningbo Teachers College and Ningbo Branch of Zhejiang Fisheries College merged to form a new Ningbo University.
